What Do I Need to Know Before Coloring Hair Extensions?

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for April 11, 2012

What Do I Need to Know Before Coloring Hair Extensions?

Donna Bella Hair comes in a variety of 37 colors, ranging from jet black to platinum, to funky-colored hair to help you create the hair you want — whether it’s to match your hair,  add highlights or lowlights to it, or add vibrant color.

In some instances, when you can’t match the color you want exactly, you may need to color the hair you purchased. Since Donna Bella Hair is made from 100% human remy hair and has gone through extensive treatment processes to maintain the integrity of the hair, you can color the extensions as you would your own hair.  However, there are certain precautions to take when coloring hair extensions.  Here are a few of our recommendations:

- Deposit color to the hair; do not strip it of color.  This is particularly important to note because the process involved in lightening hair can damage the hair extensions permanently.

- Never go more than two levels when depositing the color.

- Color the hair extensions before installing them.

- Test the desired color on a strand of hair to see the results before coloring your whole batch of hair extensions.

As long as you follow these general precautions and others that may come from your particular brand of color, you will be able to achieve optimal results when coloring your Donna Bella hair extensions.

Can I Color 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for January 18,2012

Can I Color 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

If at all possible, we do not recommend coloring 100% human hair extensions because we want to maintain the integrity of the hair extensions. However if you must, yes, you can color hair extensions using demi-permanent hair dye. There are hair dyes that are both permanent and demi-permanent in the same tube and you have the option to change developers, these hair dyes are not recommended. Demi-permanent color generally is ammonia free which means there is no ammonia in the tube itself.

Remember when using demi-permanent it means you are only depositing color to the extension. The rules of color do apply. If you are coloring hair more than 2 levels darker a fill maybe recommended. This has to be done with demi too. It is recommended that if you are coloring hair extensions, to choose the hair extensions that are two shades/levels lighter than the color you want to achieve.

Before coloring the extensions completely, it is best to do a strand test to avoid ruining a full set of hair.

Note that it is not possible to lift color or go lighter when coloring 100% human remy hair extensions. It will damage and compromise the quality of the hair.

How Often Do you Need to Touch Up Extensions?

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for December 14, 2011

How Often Do you Need to Touch Up Extensions?

If hair grows enough for a client to come in every 6 to 8 weeks then it makes sense that the client may see some slippage with their beads, therefore they may need some moved up.

I think to schedule a client for a touch up every 6 to 8 weeks is a good way to keep them on their regular salon visits. Be sure to let them know you may or may not have to move beads up.

At times clients may not need a touch up. If they don’t think they need one they may cancel. This isn’t always a good thing. They aren’t the professional, so sometimes when clients give the professional advise it can backfire. They may show up 2 or 3 weeks later complaining about 50% of their extensions falling out…

You are the professional, so be sure to keep them booked. If they come in and they don’t need a touch up then give them a good shampoo and blow-dry. They’ll love the attention their scalp is getting!

What Are Remy Human Hair Extensions, Anyway?

Monday, November 1st, 2010

So you’ve heard all the buzz about Donna Bella’s premium Remy human hair extensions – but what does that actually mean?

Remy, or remi, is actually an industry term that has a very specific meaning. On an untreated human head, all the hair grows one direction – outward. This means that if you’re wearing a ponytail, all your hair is going the same way. However, not all hair extension strands are like ponytails – sometimes, half of the hairs are backwards! You know how sliding your hand down your ponytail is nice and smooth? Non-remy hair extensions won’t be smooth – they’ll catch and pull on your hand, and they may even fall out of the hair extension strand easier. That’s definitely not hot!

The part of the hair that catches is called the cuticle, and it’s the outside layer of your hair. Some companies will actually remove the cuticle, so the hair extension doesn’t have much of a “direction” anymore. However, this makes the hair much thinner, more brittle, and it doesn’t hold up as well. Remy hair is better than cuticle-less hair because it’s still strong enough to be styled, gives lots of volume, and it’s silky-smooth, all the way down! Plus, you won’t need as many hair extension strands because Remy hair extensions are thicker than any other kind.

You can trust that Donna Bella hair extensions are also 100% human hair. This means that there’s absolutely no plastic or synthetic material in your hair extensions! Plastic and synthetic materials are terrible for hair extensions, because they can’t be styled and tend to look obviously artificial. Just think of what your high-heat straightener would do to a doll’s hair! Of course, to keep your hair extensions looking their best, you shouldn’t style with a lot of high heat more than a few times a week, but your hair extensions will definitely hold up. Ask your stylist to recommend a heat protectant spray for your extensions!

Donna Bella premium Remy human hair extensions are the highest quality hair extensions on the market, because the hairs are strong and lasting while silky and smooth at the same time! Don’t believe me? Try some hair extensions for yourself!

Washing Your Hair with Hair Extensions

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

There are a few tricks to washing your hair with hair extensions that will help your extensions last longer and look as healthy and soft as when they first went in!

First , you want to make sure you’re using the best products. Your hairstylist will recommend some good shampoos and conditioners, but you want to make sure you’re using a high quality, sulfate-free, color-safe S&C set. You don’t want to use products with a lot of heavy oils, as they will make your hair heavy and could allow the hair strands to slide out of the connections!

So you’re ready to get your hair extensions wet. Growing up, you probably got used to hopping in the shower, getting your hair wet, putting some shampoo in your palm, and then rubbing it all over your hair, letting your hair go every which way over your scalp! It’s a good way to get your hair clean – but it’s damaging to your hair, and it’s especially damaging to hair extensions!

To shampoo your hair properly, you need to remember to leave your hair hanging downward, and carefully apply the shampoo in a downward direction, being very gentle. This will prevent damage to your hair strands, protect the extension connectors, and prevent hair tangles! You still need to scrub the scalp, though, to prevent hair matting. Remember to detangle your hair with a hair extension brush (many come in hair extension kits) before showering, so your hair will be easy to clean and condition.

Next, apply conditioner to your hair. Remember the rule that you only apply conditioner below your ears? Same applies here. Make sure to condition your hair below the extension connectors, whether they are glued extensions or beaded. Conditioner is so slippery that it could cause you to lose some strands, if it gets in the connection beads! Most hair types will benefit from detangling the hair while it is still wet, with a hair extension brush or a very wide-toothed comb on the ends. Then, to finish, dab with a towel – don’t wring your hair! – and blow dry. Finishing with a cold blast will close the cuticle of your hair and your hair extensions, encouraging shine, softness, and hair health, while warding against tangles.

So now you know how to take great care of your hair extensions. Just visit your hairdresser every three months for some easy maintenance, and you’ll be wearing gorgeous hair extensions that look great for as long as you like!
