Can I Perm 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for January 26,2012

Can I Perm 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

Just like with coloring, we do not encourage perming 100% human hair extensions because we want to maintain the integrity of the hair extensions. Opt for wavy hair extensions instead. Also remember that human remy hair extensions can be curled temporarily using your curling iron. If you have no other option but to perm, always do a strand test to avoid wasting a full set of hair.

Perming human remy hair extensions will be the fastest perm you’ll ever do. In most cases, you should not perm extensions for more than five minutes. You can perm extensions using a color safe perm for most hair or a Joliet perm for blonde extensions. Curly clients can finally have the perfect curl from root all the way to the ends of their extensions. Be sure to use a perm rod that is one size smaller than the natural curl and a rod that matches their curl. This will ensure a blended texture without being able to tell which is natural and which is permed.

Can I Color 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for January 18,2012

Can I Color 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?

If at all possible, we do not recommend coloring 100% human hair extensions because we want to maintain the integrity of the hair extensions. However if you must, yes, you can color hair extensions using demi-permanent hair dye. There are hair dyes that are both permanent and demi-permanent in the same tube and you have the option to change developers, these hair dyes are not recommended. Demi-permanent color generally is ammonia free which means there is no ammonia in the tube itself.

Remember when using demi-permanent it means you are only depositing color to the extension. The rules of color do apply. If you are coloring hair more than 2 levels darker a fill maybe recommended. This has to be done with demi too. It is recommended that if you are coloring hair extensions, to choose the hair extensions that are two shades/levels lighter than the color you want to achieve.

Before coloring the extensions completely, it is best to do a strand test to avoid ruining a full set of hair.

Note that it is not possible to lift color or go lighter when coloring 100% human remy hair extensions. It will damage and compromise the quality of the hair.

How Often Do you Need to Touch Up Extensions?

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for December 14, 2011

How Often Do you Need to Touch Up Extensions?

If hair grows enough for a client to come in every 6 to 8 weeks then it makes sense that the client may see some slippage with their beads, therefore they may need some moved up.

I think to schedule a client for a touch up every 6 to 8 weeks is a good way to keep them on their regular salon visits. Be sure to let them know you may or may not have to move beads up.

At times clients may not need a touch up. If they don’t think they need one they may cancel. This isn’t always a good thing. They aren’t the professional, so sometimes when clients give the professional advise it can backfire. They may show up 2 or 3 weeks later complaining about 50% of their extensions falling out…

You are the professional, so be sure to keep them booked. If they come in and they don’t need a touch up then give them a good shampoo and blow-dry. They’ll love the attention their scalp is getting!
