Weekly Hair Extension Tip for January 26,2012
Can I Perm 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?
Just like with coloring, we do not encourage perming 100% human hair extensions because we want to maintain the integrity of the hair extensions. Opt for wavy hair extensions instead. Also remember that human remy hair extensions can be curled temporarily using your curling iron. If you have no other option but to perm, always do a strand test to avoid wasting a full set of hair.
Perming human remy hair extensions will be the fastest perm you’ll ever do. In most cases, you should not perm extensions for more than five minutes. You can perm extensions using a color safe perm for most hair or a Joliet perm for blonde extensions. Curly clients can finally have the perfect curl from root all the way to the ends of their extensions. Be sure to use a perm rod that is one size smaller than the natural curl and a rod that matches their curl. This will ensure a blended texture without being able to tell which is natural and which is permed.

Can I Color 100% Human Remy Hair Extensions?
If at all possible, we do not recommend coloring 100% human hair extensions because we want to maintain the integrity of the hair extensions. However if you must, yes, you can color hair extensions using demi-permanent hair dye. There are hair dyes that are both permanent and demi-permanent in the same tube and you have the option to change developers, these hair dyes are not recommended. Demi-permanent color generally is ammonia free which means there is no ammonia in the tube itself.
Remember when using demi-permanent it means you are only depositing color to the extension. The rules of color do apply. If you are coloring hair more than 2 levels darker a fill maybe recommended. This has to be done with demi too. It is recommended that if you are coloring hair extensions, to choose the hair extensions that are two shades/levels lighter than the color you want to achieve.
Before coloring the extensions completely, it is best to do a strand test to avoid ruining a full set of hair.
Note that it is not possible to lift color or go lighter when coloring 100% human remy hair extensions. It will damage and compromise the quality of the hair.

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for January 4,2012
Is Shedding Normal For Hair Extensions?
Shedding is a natural process for all people. On average a client sheds 40-100 strands daily.
If half of your clients hair is locked into a bead with an extension, they will still shed their natural hair. This is a normal process and can be scary for a client to see.
Reassure your client that they loose hair daily and this is a normal process. It is also normal after applying a full head to a client for them to loose up to 10% within the first month. Let them know the amount they may loose so they are not rushing in to the salon in panic.
Example: If I use 100 extensions I may tell my client they may loose up to 10 strands over the next month. Just take the strand put it into a bag and bring it with you to your next appointment
However, if you lose more than 15 strands, please call me because this is a sign that something went wrong with either the application or with the maintenance at home.

Weekly Hair Extension Tip for December 28, 2011
What Causes Slippage?
Slippage is 50% of the reason why extensions aren’t successful occassionally. An oily scalp, adding oil onto the hair strand, or using too much conditioner near the bead are the main reasons for slippage to happen.
Be sure to analyze your clients scalp and hair before the service. Clarifying the hair prior to application and keeping hair oil free will help ITip application to have long lasting results.
If the client has a naturally oily scalp that can’t be controlled with your product recommendations, it may be best to not perform this service on them.
Adding an excessive amount of oil to your hair near where the extension is will cause the “tightness” of the bead to loosen and the extension to slip. Conditioning your hair is essential in haircare maintenance, however applying where the bead is placed can cause the hair to swell above the tightened bead and can cause 1 of 2 things. First, it can cause your own hairs’ elasticity to stretch and not return to it’s natural state which means breakage, or second, it could cause the hair to swell pushing the extension down and causing it to slip and eventually fall out of placement on the head.
If you use the best practices when installing beaded hair extensions, and your client sticks to the maintenance suggesstions you’ve given, you should vary rarly see any signs of slippage.

What is the Biggest Difference Between Tape, Beaded and Fusion Extensions?
Tape – is the quickest way to add length or volume. They are super slender and very easy to conceal. The tape on the extensions is not common household tape. We’ve engineered our tape to withstand sweat, and buildup of products. Tape in extensions are perfect for any formal occasion, weekend get away, or for someone to try to see if they will like them before they commit to a higher priced extension service. One great thing about tape in is they are reusable up to 3 times. We have replacement tape that makes it a quick, simple service you can offer and it takes the same amount of time it takes you to do a color touch up!
Bead – a small aluminum grooved bead holds the extension hair to the client’s hair. These are easy, fast, light wieght, and blend naturally. There is no glue, heat, or any adhesive that is used. Therefore there is no damage. The ITip method lasts between 2 and 4 months. This is my favorite extension method because not only are they quick to perform, and cause no damage, but the hair can also be reused up to 3 times before needing new hair. Stylists that perform an ITip service correctly will find the timing on this method to be extremely profitable.
Fusion- keratin is pre attached to the extension strand. You will need a protective strip and heat tool for this application. The protective strip keeps the direct heat of the tool and the melted keratin safely away from the scalp. The extension itself can be used in whole or carefully cut in half to use a less amount for the same effective result. Your client can expect their fusion extensions to last between 4 and 6 months, when you apply this method right.
